Delhi government | Parents should avoid sending their wards to schools in private transports

Delhi government | Parents should avoid sending their wards to schools in private transports

In a recent directive, the Delhi government has asked all its schools to take steps to discourage the parents from sending their wards to school in private transports. The government claimed that most of these transport services are illegal and pose a threat to the safety of the children. The directive came into existence after the life of students were put in danger by a private transport due to non-adherence of the traffic rules. "It is observed that for transportation of school children in Delhi primarily three modes of transport are being used-- vehicles owned by the educational institutions, vehicles hired by the educational institutions and vehicles hired by parents or guardians themselves," the Directorate of Education (DoE) said in a letter to schools. It further said that the first two modes of the transportation are simple to monitor and generally follow the laws of the traffic under Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules, 1993. However, the DoE said, "A majority of private vehicles hired by parents themselves are observed to be operating illegally without taking adequate safeguards towards the safety of school children, thus jeopardizing the lives of young school children using this form of transport." The directorate further observed that "most of these vehicles are overloaded and are piled dangerously and (are driven)recklessly at great speeds in utter disregard to traffic rules and regulations." The schools have been asked to alert the parents about such recklessness of the private transports during the Parent Teacher Meetings (PTMs) and by using other interactive means. "Parents must be asked to make use of safe transport provided by the schools and abstain from sending their children in illegal school vans/cabs which can prove dangerous or fatal owing to non-adherence of motor vehicles law," DoE said.

The beneficiaries of the scheme will receive INR 10,000 as an award from the state government and the amount will be transferred directly to their accounts. The award will be presented by the Nitish Kumar under the ‘Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana’ (MKUY), which was launched by the government in April 2018. “Directions has been given by the education department to all districts to shortlist beneficiaries who cleared the state’s Plus-Two exam, the results of which were declared on June 6, for the state government award,” Principal Secretary, Education, R K Mahajan, told PTI. He further said that the money will be transferred to the respective accounts by the month of July. “The scheme, run by the education department, aims to promote education among girls, besides fighting social evils like child marriage, which, in turn, would lower fertility rate and control population. Only unmarried girls who cleared the Plus-Two exam are eligible for the benefit,” the principal secretary stated. Approved by the cabinet on April 19, 2018, the MKYU scheme offers various incentives to the girls right from their birth till they complete their graduation. If a girl completes her graduation then she is entitled to INR 25,000 from the state government irrespective of her marital status. “The program aims to take care of a girl, irrespective of her caste or religion, by providing a total sum of Rs 54,100 at different stages,” Mahajan said and added that the government has set aside a sum of INR 1400 crores for the scheme.

Higher Education Commission | Kerala CM not in support of replacing the UGC with the HECI

On Friday, Kerala CM, Pinarayi Vijayan, state clearly that he is against the center’s decision to replace the University Grants Commission with the Higher Education Commission. He said that with this move center is trying to restrict the role of the states in matters related to the education. He said “the Center’s ‘unilateral’ decision to do away with the apex higher education regulator, University Grants Commission and replace it with the Higher Education Commission under the Human Resource Development Ministry, will lead to far-reaching repercussions in the field of higher education”. But their attempt to commercialize the education sector was met with strong opposition from the lest parties and the scheme could not be implemented. He also alleged “Besides commercialization, the BJP had another aim to implement thedecision — saffronization of the educational sector.” “ Those who are against the BJP’s proposed move to do away with the UGC, need to raise their voice,” the chief minister said.
