NLU announced an increase in the seats; Students smell a foul play

NLU announced an increase in the seats; Students smell a foul play

Only a few days before declaring the results, the National Law University announced its decision to double the number of seats for this year’s Master of Laws (LL.M.) batch. The decision has raised the suspicion as many candidates are seeing this as a convenient way to bring the students from the back door. Lawyer Mohit Gupta also filed an RTI query and asked for the minutes of the meetings which led to this decision. “What will be its (university’s) course of action if it is approached by a large number of students in the next academic year demanding an increase,” he asked. Originally the university has announced only 40 seats for the 2018 batch but after conducting the exam they raised the number of seats to 80. The entrance exam was held on May 6 but the notification announcing the increase in the number of seats was issued on June 27. “It is notified that the University has decided to increase the number of seats for admission to LL.M. program for the academic session 2018-19… The seats will be filled strictly on the merit of AILET-2018 in the sport counseling scheduled to be held on July 13, 2018. The seats under Foreign National category will be filled up on the academic merit of qualifying examination,” the notification issued by the University read. “I didn’t apply for the entrance exam thinking it would be tough to crack into the top 40. Had they announced the increase in seats, I would have applied, since NLU was anyway my first choice. The other two contenders — IP University and Jindal School of Law — are very expensive,” a student, who graduated from Delhi University’s Faculty of Law told IANS. When IANS contacted the university to the reason behind such a decision, an official from the university said “this was done to give a wider reach of legal education to society and that the decision was in conformity with the Admission Announcement as it also said the number of seats may vary”. “Moreover, the action taken by the University to increase the number of seats was also approved by the Academic Council and Executive Council,” NLU-D Registrar G.S. Bajpai said.

Open School to pull DoE into court over the issue of minimum marks

Open School to pull DoE into court over the issue of minimum marks

Vinod Kumar Bansal’s daughter was a student of class X in the DAV school but could not give the exams as she fell ill. Anita Kumar’s son had to complete his class IX from correspondence as he had failed the same class in a government school. However; both students completed their class X from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) with scores of 52% and 53.2% respectively. Now, when they applied to the government school for admission in class XI they were denied admissions on the grounds of not meeting the eligibility criteria. According to the circular issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE), NIOS students need 55% marks for getting the admissions. Calling this criterion as discriminatory, the parents have decided to move to the Delhi High Court. The circular states, “Students who have passed their secondary examination class X from NIOS, with 55% marks or above in aggregate of five main subjects, are eligible for admission in vocational and humanities stream, provided they are below 17 years of age as of March 31 of the year.” The DoE officials said that the NIOS students are not considered for the admissions into commerce and science stream. “The eligibility criteria is in place because students who pass out from NIOS do not have mainstream subjects, but diluted, easier ones. This is an enabling condition for academically weak students, so that they can at least complete their intermediate level and save the year. After that, they can opt for vocational subjects. After studying diluted (easier subjects), they will not be able to cope with mainstream subjects in class XI,” said DoE Director Sanjay Goel. “The government introduced this system, how can they now bar students? It has a constitutional obligation to provide children with opportunities… now they are being denied the same without any grounds,” said Ashok Agarwal, the lawyer for the parents in the case. In 2017, Education Minister Manish Sisodia had announced that in order to control the drop out rate, students failing the class X board exams twice will be enrolled under NIOS. This year 43 percent of the students passed the exams conducted by the NIOS.
