CBSE to give students an an option of easier mathematics paper

From the upcoming academic session, CBSE has decided to introduce two levels of mathematics for the students of class 10. Students who will appear for class 10 board exams in 2020 will have the option to chose from one of the two levels of mathematics. However, there will be no change in the curriculum for the class 10 mathematics. Students will be taught the same topics irrespective of the level they choose for the exam. The decision was taken to reduce the stress among the students who face their first major exams in class 10. Citing NCF 2005, Position Paper by National Focus Group on Examination Reforms, CBSE said “just like students and schools are allowed some element of choice in terms of subjects, similarly they should be given some element of choice within a subject as well”. As notified by the CBSE, the first level will be the same as the existing one and another will be the easier one. The existing level will be called Mathematics Standard and the easier one will be called Mathematics Basic. The two-tier level will not be applicable to the internal assessment. "The syllabus, classroom teaching and internal assessment for both the levels of examination would remain the same; so that the students get an opportunity to study the whole range of topics throughout the year and are able to decide upon the level of Board examination depending upon their aptitude and abilities," said CBSE in its official statement. The Standard level is for the students who plan on pursuing maths as a subject after class 10 and basic for the students who don’t want to take math as a subject after class 10. "A student will have the right to choose between the two levels of Examination at the time of submission of List of Candidates (LoC) by the affiliated school to the Board online." If a student fails in Math exam, the students of Mathematics basic will appear in the Mathematics basic exam and students of Mathematics standard will have the option to appear in the basic or standard compartmental exam.
